custom robotic welding cell for tank fabrication

Operating-duty selection for a custom robotic welding cell for tank fabrication starts with the workpiece: shell diameter, length, wall thickness, joint types and the seam list the torch must reach. A cell sized for small brackets is not the same RFQ as a cell that must weld circumferential and longitudinal seams on a tank. Upstream forming or rolling and downstream NDT or hydrotest still have to be named as interfaces. This page does not treat a robot arm or a MIG power source as a drop-in substitute for an integrated cell. Suitability requires a named supplier response, not a shop photograph.

Operating duty

Operating context
The duty that matters here is tank fabrication: rotating a shell or head on a positioner while a robot tracks seams. Continuous production of identical tanks, mixed diameters in one cell, and repair welding of existing vessels each change cycle time, fixture mass and how often the operator loads. A single-station cell with operator loading is a different RFQ from a dual-station cell even when both photographs show a tank.

Operating duty: Design input

Write tank diameter, length, mass, material, weld process, seam list and whether every required seam must be reached without a manual reposition. Include representative production samples or drawings of the worst-case nozzle cluster. Throughput must be stated with those samples, not as a brochure units-per-hour figure. Work envelope and footprint must match the shop crane path and the rolling mill or fit-up station that feeds the cell.

Supplier answer

The manufacturer states whether the torch can reach every required seam on the tank fabrication, whether the positioner rating includes fixture mass and center-of-gravity offset, and which loading and guarding arrangement applies. The reply should include the documents that belong to that configuration. A brochure comparison chart is not a supplier answer.

Open deviation

If the RFQ says tank circumferential seams and the reply is a table-top cell for small parts without a labeled deviation, the comparison table is not aligned. The same applies when a dual-station layout is offered against a single-station brief. Record the deviation before award. Upstream/downstream interfaces that were never named remain open.
